For those with a deep appreciation for history, music, and breathtaking cityscapes, Dinant promises an enriching escape. Situated just 90 kilometers southeast of Brussels, this charming town is often considered one of Belgium’s hidden gems, offering a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural significance.Nestled between the steep cliffs that line the Meuse River, Dinant’s distinctive layout offers a striking contrast between the river’s calm flow and the towering rocks that surround it. Perched high on one of these cliffs stands a formidable fortress, built in the 16th century, which adds to the town’s majestic skyline. The name Dinant is derived from the Celtic “Divo Nanto”, meaning the Sacred Valley — aptly reflecting the serene yet dramatic environment of this historical town.
The Birthplace of the Saxophone
For music enthusiasts, Dinant holds particular significance as the birthplace of Antoine-Joseph “Adolphe” Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. Born in 1814, Sax was a skilled Belgian flute and clarinet player, but it was his creation of this woodwind instrument in 1846 that left an indelible mark on the world of music. This invention became a cornerstone in marching bands, orchestras, and jazz ensembles. Sax was also behind the invention of several other instruments, including the saxotromba, saxhorn, saxtuba, trombone, and a new model for the bass clarinet, which has become the standard design in use today.

Adolphe Sax’s heritage is deeply intertwined with the art of instrument-making, a tradition upheld by his family in Dinant for generations. Born and raised in this picturesque town, Sax eventually relocated to France, but his legacy remains ever-present at Mr Sax’s House, a charming little museum dedicated to his life and groundbreaking work. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of Sax, with exhibits that showcase his innovations and contributions to music. Throughout the museum, the resonant tones of saxophones — both classical and jazz — fill the air, offering a melodic backdrop to your exploration. (Mr Sax’s House is open daily from 9.00 to 19.00, with free admission. For more information, visit sax.dinant.be/EN/sax-the-city/house-of-mr-sax)

The musical spirit of Dinant extends beyond the museum. Along the Pont Charles de Gaulle, which spans the river and links the town’s two halves, 28 vibrant, resin saxophones are displayed in a striking procession, adding to the town’s rich jazz ambiance.
Beyond its musical heritage, Dinant is home to several must-see attractions. The Church of Our Lady of Dinant, with its distinctive onion-shaped spire, stands proudly against the backdrop of the cliffs, offering a striking Gothic architectural presence. For a unique natural experience, venture to the Grotte de Dinant La Merveilleuse, a spectacular stalactite cave located in the South of the city, where you can explore the awe-inspiring underground formations.
A Quick Stop in Namur
Only 30 kilometers from Dinant lies Namur, another gem worth exploring. Perched on a hill where the Meuse and Sambre rivers converge, the city boasts a scenic fortress offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. You can take a cable car to the top, where the fortress overlooks the city and the river valleys. Namur is also home to Les Bateliers – Museums of Archaeology and Decorative Arts, a fascinating museum that combines the lavish 18th-century Counts of Groesbeeck mansion, a 19th-century church, and a contemporary gallery under one roof. Visitors can also enjoy the peaceful French-style garden, which provides a serene setting throughout the year.
