1. Getting to know Galle
Galle is an important port and a coastal city with a diverse history and culture. The atmosphere within the city zone is filled with the aura of a fortified city in the colonial past of the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Galle reached its height of development in the 19th century, during the Dutch colonial period. Groote Kerk, also known as the Dutch Reformed Church, is the oldest Protestant church still in use in the fortified city of Galle.
2. Visit ancient fortress
The fortress of Galle (Galle Fort) was originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. It featured an earthen wall and wooden fence by the cliff. Later, when the Dutch took over, fortifications were changed to a strong granite wall. Also, from the original three towers, it increased to 14 and expanded along the ocean around the city, enabling tourists to walk and take in the beautiful views. Today, it is the largest remaining fort in Asia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
