Begin this journey with the story of Hong Kong, the first of the four cities—Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, and Kolkata.

When THAI first touched down in Hong Kong, the city was already a thriving trade hub, buzzing with merchants, rickshaws, and the clatter of trams. Under British rule, Hong Kong changed from a small fishing village into a vibrant metropolis. The waterfront of Central was lined with colonial-style buildings, while bustling markets and neon-lit streets gave the city an electric energy. The Kai Tak Airport approach, famous for its dramatic landings between skyscrapers, became a legendary experience until the airport’s closure in 1998.

Today, Hong Kong remains one of the world’s busiest financial centres, yet pockets of nostalgia remain. The Star Ferry still shuttles passengers across Victoria Harbour, just as it has since 1888, offering spectacular skyline views. In Wan Chai, historic shophouses and vintage trams—affectionately known as “ding dings”—coexist with luxury skyscrapers and Michelin-starred restaurants.

Beyond the well-known landmarks, several historic sites capture Hong Kong’s rich heritage. The former post office on Queen’s Road, a striking colonial-era building from 1915, stands as a reminder of the city’s early commercial significance. Nearby, a beautifully preserved blue shophouse from the 1920s offers a glimpse into traditional Chinese tenement-style living. And for sports enthusiasts, the newly developed Kai Tak Stadium is set to host world-class events where the former airport once stood.

For a taste of old Hong Kong, try Mido Café, where the décor and menu have been preserved since the 1960s, serving milk tea and Hong Kong-style French toast. Later, visit Wan Chai, where street markets awaken under the golden glow of lanterns and neon signs and fresh seafood is spread out on beds of ice, ready to be transformed into sizzling Cantonese delicacies. For an even livelier evening, hop onto a ding ding heading west to the bustling atmosphere of Hennessy Road, or take a walk up the hill to discover Staunton Street in the Soho district, where trendy bars line the streets.
