Experiences

Bavaria is more than Munich’s beer gardens and museums—it’s a tapestry of lakes, castles, and mountain passes that embody Germany’s romantic imagination.

Just beyond the city limits, roads unfold into storybook landscapes where every curve promises an adventure. These three scenic routes capture Bavaria’s charm, history, and soul in motion.

Munich may be Bavaria’s cosmopolitan capital, but some of Germany’s most enchanting landscapes unfold just beyond the city limits. Venture out on any of these three scenic side routes and discover alpine panoramas, medieval towns, and royal castles that define Bavaria’s timeless charm.

Take an Epic Drive along the Alpine

The German Alpine Road (Deutsche Alpenstraße) stretches nearly 450 kilometers from Lake Constance to Königssee, tracing the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. It’s a journey of winding roads, mirror-like lakes, and pastel-painted villages surrounded by meadows and mountain peaks. Stop in Oberammergau for its famous frescoed houses, Bad Hindelang for spa serenity, or Tegernsee for a lakeside lunch with alpine views. The road is as much about the drive as the discovery — a slow, cinematic route where every bend reveals new beauty.

A Romantic Sightseeing

For romance and heritage, follow the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) from Würzburg to Füssen. This legendary route links walled towns, Gothic churches, and cobblestone squares that feel frozen in time. Wander through Rothenburg ob der Tauber, visit Augsburg’s Renaissance treasures, and marvel at the baroque splendor of Wieskirche before reaching Neuschwanstein Castle, King Ludwig II’s storybook masterpiece nestled in alpine mist.

The Castles Spotting

Short on time? Take the Royal Castles Route, a perfect one- or two-day drive from Munich to Linderhof Palace and Neuschwanstein Castle. Along the way, pause in Landsberg am Lech, a riverside town with pastel façades and peaceful cafés. Linderhof’s ornate gardens and Neuschwanstein’s soaring turrets capture Bavaria’s royal romanticism in just a day’s journey.

Each route reveals a different side of Bavaria — mountain grandeur, fairytale towns, or royal fantasy — yet all share the same spirit of calm exploration. Beyond Munich, Bavaria invites travelers to slow down, wander, and let beauty unfold one winding kilometer at a time.
