Singapore is one of the four iconic cities—alongside Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Kolkata—featured in the ‘Tales of Four Cities’ series, written by Kunakorn Vanichviroon.

When THAI first flew to Singapore, flights landed at Paya Lebar Airport, a modest facility serving a city on the cusp of transformation. In the 1960s, Singapore was still finding its footing as an independent nation. Its strategic location at the crossroads of maritime trade had long made it a key commercial hub. Along the Singapore River, warehouses and godowns stored goods for shipment abroad, while merchants conducted business in bustling marketplaces. Raffles Place, then lined with low-rise buildings, was the heart of the financial district.

Today, Changi Airport is an aviation marvel, consistently ranked among the world’s best. The Singapore River is now home to vibrant drinking and dining districts like Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. Next door, a sprawling plaza now sits atop Raffles Place MRT station, replacing what was once a thriving commercial square of trading houses.

Despite its modern skyline, Singapore carefully preserves its heritage. The colonial-era Fullerton Hotel, previously Singapore’s main post office, has been transformed into a luxury retreat. The iconic Raffles Hotel welcomes guests with its old-world charm and its signature Singapore Sling, a cocktail first crafted in 1915.

Among the city’s treasured heritage sites, Thian Hock Keng Temple, one of Singapore’s oldest Hokkien temples, remains a spiritual sanctuary. Built in 1842, it was where early Chinese immigrants offered prayers for safe voyages. Meanwhile, the historic Clifford Pier, once a key arrival point for travel by sea, has been repurposed into an elegant waterfront dining destination.
