Songkran, the Thai New Year festival, is a time-honored celebration that takes place annually from 13-15 April. Rooted in ancient Thai traditions, it marks the passage of time and offers a vibrant occasion for people across the country to come together in a collective expression of joy and renewal.
In 2023, UNESCO recognized “Songkran in Thailand” as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, underscoring its significance to both local culture and global heritage.
The term “Songkran” originates from Sanskrit, meaning “movement,” and refers to the sun’s transition between zodiac signs. While Songkran occurs each month, it takes on special significance when the sun enters Aries, marking the arrival of the Thai New Year. Known as “Maha Songkran,” this moment symbolizes a time of renewal—an occasion for making merit, performing good deeds, and cleansing oneself from past misfortunes, heralding a fresh start and new opportunities in life.
