Red lotus field boat trip in Thailand is a popular sightseeing activity. Tourists are expected to see a sea of blooming red lotuses and beautiful wetland swamps. Thailand is home to several red lotus fields but the most popular ones are at Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake in the northeastern province of Udon Thani and Thale Noi in the southern province of Phatthalung.

Red Lotus Lake, Udon Thani province
The Red Lotus Lake or Thung Dok Bua Daeng is located in Nong Han swamp, about 45 kilometers from Udon Thani city. The blooming season of red lotuses begins in December till February. Tourists can rent local boats to see the red lotuses and enjoy the scenery of Nong Han. A boat ride lasts 90-120 minutes and are available all day. Most people like to start the ride from 6-11am because weather is not too hot. In addition to the dark red lotuses, there are birds and other aquatic plants to admire.

Red Lotus Lake, Thale Noi, Phatthalung province
Thale Noi is a large fresh water source located at the upper most section of Songkhla Lake. It is recommended that tourists stay overnight near Pak Phra canal to get a boat ride before sunrise. The boat cruise will take you to see the Yo Yak fishing equipment used by local fishermen, before reaching the area of red lotuses. There are many types of lotuses, but the most common one is the pink lotus. Lotus flower blooms from February to April. Highlight of this place, aside from the lotuses, are the presence of many plants, waterfowl and herds of water buffalo that have adapted well to the natural food sources of the wetlands.

The Varni Community Enterprise Learning Center is a place to learn how to weave products from the Krajood aquatic plant flourishing in Thale Noi. The plant belongs to the same family as sedge, which thrives along the edges of the Thale Noi. The center offers a rest area for visitors, sells products made from Krajood, in addition to offering workshops on weaving Krajood.

Tips: Phatthalung province does not have an airport but tourists can fly to Hat Yai Airport in Songkhla province with Thai Airways, which is approximately 120 kilometers from Phatthalung province.
