Art knows no geographic boundaries, existing instead as a fluid continuum that mirrors our deeply interconnected histories. This profound truth animates The Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026, a distinguished Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, presented by the Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation (BABF). From May 9 to August 2, 2026, the venerable halls of the Palazzo Rocca Contarini Corfù will serve as the stage for this ambitious curation by Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda. Realized through the visionary support of Thai Beverage Public Company Limited (ThaiBev), One Bangkok and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the exhibition unites an illustrious cohort of 20 international artists, each offering poignant, multidisciplinary reflections on the enduring anxieties of human displacement, historical memory, and ecological fragility.
At the core of The Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026 is a profound reflection on how collective trauma, colonization, and environmental crisis reshape our world. Long durational performances, cinema, and visceral installations serve to translate shared histories of loss into a landscape of strangeness, melancholy, and ultimate solace. Rather than merely documenting geopolitical friction, the curated selection amplifies the quiet, minor keys of marginalized communities navigating a world in flux.
The Heavy Toll of the Sea
A major focal point of the presentation is the participation of celebrated performance artist Marina Abramović. The exhibition features her evocative 2005 video work Sea Punishing, a visceral remembrance of the devastating Andaman Sea tsunami where assistants whip the waves in reference to King Xerxes punishing the destructive ocean. Additionally, a new feature film directed by Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda follows Abramović alongside Thai choreographer Pichet Klunchun and an international ensemble on a contemplative spiritual journey navigating themes of suffering, solitude, and transcendence between Bangkok and Venice.
