Kochi (also known as Cochin) is a city in the Indian state of Kerala. It is known for its unparalleled beauty in terms of natural habitat, rich cultural heritage and people. Kochi is often referred to as the “Queen of the Arabian Sea.” Kochi is an ancient port city in Kerala, located at the southern end of the Arabian Sea. It is ranked as one of the best cities to visit in India and is always named amongst the top travel destinations. If you have an opportunity to visit Kochi, we have seven tips for you.

1. Find information about Kochi before you begin your journey

Kochi, a major port since 1341, has been the center of spice trade in India. This port city is a melting pot of diverse cultures, influenced by its historical trade ties with Greece, Arabia, Portugal, Great Britain and the Netherlands among many other cultures. The old city quarters feature tiled colonial bungalows and diverse houses of worship, making its beauty second to none. Famous for its pristine beaches, Kochi is also known for its cantilevered Chinese fishing nets erected along the quiet riverside villages. Another highlight of this city is the famous Ayurvedic massage therapy.

2. Stroll around the old quarters of Fort Kochi

Take a leisure walk and explore top destinations such as the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, which is one of the finest churches and a heritage edifice of Kerala. This church, built in Gothic style, is endowed with artistic grandeur. Another site to visit includes the Aspinwall House, a 18th century British heritage sea-facing building which serves as the main venue for the international Kochi-Muziris Biennale art festival. The quarters also are great places to shop for spices or sip coffee at chic cafés.

The seaside promenade runs from Vasco da Gama Square where you can watch ancient Chinese fishing nets lowered into the sea by local fishermen. Make sure you catch sunset in the evening. In addition to magnificent Arabian Sea views, you may be lucky enough to see a pod of friendly dolphins swimming in their natural habitat.
