2. Plant-based Celebration
Phuket, Thailand
October 21-29, 2025
The Nine Emperor Gods Festival that takes over Phuket annually is often referred to simply as the jay, or vegetarian, festival, but devotees partake in more than just plant-based diets. Alongside stalls offering inventive meat-free food, the streets of Phuket Town will boast wild processions made up of traditional lion dances, explosive firecracker displays, and some extreme self-purification rituals, such as walking on hot coals. While Phuket hosts the largest version of this Taoist celebration, which falls in the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, many people across Thailand go veggie during these nine remarkable days.
