Ring of Fire – Solar Yang & Lunar Weerasethakul
Naoshima Island, Japan
A collaborative art installation by South Korean artist Haegue Yang and Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Ring of Fire explores the cyclical nature of day and night through a profound sensory experience. Drawing inspiration from the geological zone encircling the Pacific Ocean, infamous for its seismic and volcanic activity, the installation serves as a poignant reminder of the earth’s constant movement. This immersive work responds in real-time to geological shifts, manifesting through the interplay of sound, light, vibration, and shadow. Yang’s Solar (Day) will be unveiled during daylight hours, while Apichatpong’s Lunar (Night) will grace the space after dusk.

Ring of Fire will reside for three years in Matabe, a traditional Japanese house situated in the Honmura district of Naoshima Island, renowned for its rich artistic heritage.
Duration: 21 June 2024 – 2027
Opening Hours: Solar (Day), Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-16:30; Lunar (Night), Friday to Sunday, 17:30-18:05. Advance reservation required.
