1. Ferry of the Future
Stockholm, Sweden
Like a giant swan, Stockholm’s new passenger ferry service, Nova (Mon-Fri: 07:15-16:50, weekend service available), flies low and fast across the water. Developed by Swedish firm Candela, this electric hydrofoil vessel has cut travel times in half between the island suburb of Ekerö and Stockholm’s City Hall, and has done so efficiently: its computer-controlled wings lift the hull above the water, drastically reducing energy consumption compared to conventional vessels. Proof that sustainable transport can feel genuinely magical, Nova takes just 30 minutes to reach Ekerö, which leaves you with more time to explore its two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the ancient Viking village of Birka, and the magnificent Drottningholm Palace.
