For history enthusiasts and culture seekers alike, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province is a treasure trove of ancient splendor. Formerly Thailand’s capital for over 417 years (1350-1767), Ayutthaya Historical Park was honored with UNESCO World Heritage status in 1991.

Located just 70 kilometers from Bangkok, a scenic drive of approximately one hour or a leisurely 2.5-hour train ride will bring you to this remarkable destination. Ideal for those on a tight schedule, a day trip to Ayutthaya offers a perfect glimpse into its historical grandeur.

Morning

The Ayutthaya Historical Park is home to a wealth of temples and ancient sites, offering a rich tapestry of history to explore. Begin your journey at Wat Phra Si Sanphet, a majestic temple nestled within the remnants of a former royal palace that once served as the heart of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Adjacent to it, you will find Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, where an exquisitely restored Buddha image, centuries old, stands as a testament to the park’s storied past. Complement your visit with a stroll through the nearby shopping area, where you can discover an array of Ayutthaya souvenirs.

Late Morning

Continue your exploration at the temples encircling Bueng Phra Ram Park, beginning with Wat Phra Ram, renowned for its imposing prang that commands attention from afar. Proceed to Wat Ratchaburana, where you can venture inside its prang to uncover its historical depths. Do not miss Wat Mahathat, famous for its iconic Buddha head, intricately entwined within the roots of a tree. As the sun reaches its zenith, indulge in local culinary delights like succulent grilled river prawns or boat noodles, celebrated for their deeply flavorful broth.

Afternoon

Escape the afternoon heat and delve into Ayutthaya’s cultural riches by exploring its esteemed museums. Begin your journey at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, celebrated for its comprehensive collection of regional antiques. Adjacent to it, the Ayutthaya Gold Treasure Exhibition Building presents an exquisite display of golden artifacts. Alternatively, visit the Chandrakasem National Museum, housed in the historic Chandrakasem Palace—an edifice erected in the early Ayutthaya period and later adapted as a temporary royal residence during the reign of King Rama IV about 150 years ago. Nearby, the Hua Ro Market offers an authentic glimpse into local life, while the evening reveals a charming riverside market opposite the museum, where you can relish local and street food amidst a scenic waterfront setting.

Evening

Before wrapping up your visit, journey to Wat Chaiwatthanaram, a jewel among Ayutthaya’s ancient sites, gracefully situated along the Chao Phraya River. As the day wanes, the tranquil evening light bathes the prangs and chedis in a golden glow, offering a stunning and serene conclusion to your explorations. Should one day prove insufficient to uncover all the wonders, consider extending your stay to delve into other remarkable sites such as Phu Khao Thong, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, and Wat Phutthaisawan, each offering its own unique charm and historical significance. Including activities such as boat trips to admire the riverside scenery and cycling through the city, we guarantee that the enchanting allure of Ayutthaya will linger in your heart for years to come.
