If you are looking for sustainable tourism destinations in Chiang Mai province then go no further than “Ban Mae Kampong.” Ban Mae Kampong is one of the first attractions chosen because of its ubiquitous small village charm. Nestled in the middle of a luscious green valley dating back more than 100 years – Ban Mae Kampong has Mother Nature and the charismatic Lanna community lifestyle to soothe and heal souls of visitors.

Sustainable Tourism Model

Ban Mae Kampong is located in Mae On district of Chiang Mai province. The locals are the Lanna people of the old Lanna Kingdom. In the year 2000, an eco-tourism village business model was established to offer private and modern homestay experiences, while still retaining much of its sought-after flavor of the Lanna Community. Tourists can experience authentic village life with activities such as collecting Miang tea leaves and growing coffee. Tea and coffee plantation tours offer opportunities to support local products by contributing to household income for the village.

Authentic street food is readily available for your palate and epicureans alike. Also featured are café and dessert shops for coffee lovers to pin down and share locations; while a local gallery offers entertainment and artistic inspirations. The aforementioned is part and parcel as to why this small village has become an endearing community based on sustainable eco-tourism models. It is a worthwhile destination to visit.

A day trip to Mae Kampong

Ban Mae Kampong is located in a valley which contributes to its cool weather. It takes about 90 minutes by car from Chiang Mai city. If time is limited, you can opt for a one-day trip – starting in the morning and returning in the evening. The first destination has to be “Ban Him Huay Lung Pud & Pa Peng,” (Facebook: maekampong.homestay) a Lanna style building that serves as a check-in point for tourists. Then take a stroll and choose your delicious street food sold by smiling locals. You will enjoy the experience so much that you will be oblivious to time.

Continue your journey to Rabiang Café restaurant which has a spectacular mountain view that surrounds Ban Mae Kampong village. Trail and hiking enthusiasts should stop by Mae Kampong waterfall. There is a nature study trail featuring a seven-step waterfall – a waterfall basin is there for you to swim. If you have time, take the next bus up to Kew Fin viewpoint, which is also very beautiful.

Do not forget to visit Mae Kampong temple or Wat Kantha Prueksa, the village’s only temple almost 100 years old, which has a chapel in the middle of a stream.

Relax and sleep at homestay accommodations

If you have a few days to spare, just lie down and listen to the sound of nature. You can choose from many styles of homestay, with prices ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars. Also, do not miss the tea-picking activity or a stroll through tea and coffee plantations where you can learn new things from local guides. Being surrounded by nature can create happiness within and bring positive energy to your life.
