After witnessing the beauty of palaces, do not forget to stop and admire the royal lavish gardens.

1. Versailles Palace

France

The Palace of Versailles is one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe. However, sharing the glory and grandeur is the equally magnificent gardens of the Palace of Versailles itself. The sprawling 1,976-acre garden displays a symmetrical landscape layout, which means that the garden layout on both sides is exactly the same. There are beautiful fountains and sculptures that are strategically to perfection in the garden. Due to the garden’s large size, we recommend taking a break at Le Dauphin, the most delightful café in the garden that serves drinks, desserts and snacks to refuel your energy for the remainder of your walk. Every Spring to Fall, there are musical performances and fountain shows in the garden. Tickets for the music and fountain shows can be purchased separately from the Palace Tour.

Isola Bella is one of the islands in the middle of Lake Maggiore, North of Milan. Within the island is the Baroque castle Palazzo Borromeo and its large Baroque gardens of the equally lavish Teatro Massimo. Inside the garden are decorated statues, carved pillars and intricately crafted waterfalls. There are also colorful ornamental plants, roses, rhododendrons and camellias. Highlights are beautiful white peacocks walking freely in the garden, creating a fairy-tale image to captivate senses. If you have time, you should also visit the nearby island of Isola Madre.

Rosenborg Castle Gardens, also known as the King’s Garden, is located in the heart of Copenhagen. It houses the oldest garden in Denmark, and currently, is open as a public park for people to visit. The park is suitable for picnics – to sit, relax and admire the large flower beds that change varieties each season. Rose beds are one of the highlights. During summer, there is a puppet theater for children. When the time comes to stage the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, even while sitting in the garden, you can hear loud music playing in the background.

Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna was built in the architectural style of Rococo, which is why the entire palace is absolutely elegant. Also the same can be said of its adjacent parks. The gardens of Schönbrunn Palace have been open as public space since 1779 – covering an area of approximately one-square kilometer. Inside the park was the world’s first zoo. Currently, the garden consists of a forest garden, large flower beds arranged in a symmetrical landscape, a rare collection of plants, a maze and a botanical garden. Do not miss out on tasting desserts at Café Gloriette, a popular café located in the middle of the garden, where you can actually see Schönbrunn Palace from a distance.

Changdeokgung Palace was built during the Joseon dynasty, approximately 600 years ago. Inside the palace is the famous Biwon [secret garden] or Huwon [rear garden], a garden created exclusively for royal family members to relax at their leisure. Large trees, hundreds of years old, provide shade over a pond and a summer pavilion. The garden is said to be at its most beautiful form during Fall. The bright green leaves all gradually turn to shades of yellow, orange and red. The secret garden is only open at scheduled times, so it is recommended you make reservations in advance.
