Lofoten boasts an unparalleled natural landscape, featuring white sandy beaches tucked into picturesque coves, crystal-clear blue waters, towering mountains, dramatic cliffs, and winding nature trails ideal for hiking and trekking. Charming fishing villages dot the coastline, adding a quaint and authentic charm to the island experience. Whether visiting in fall, winter, or the spectacular summer season, Lofoten promises unforgettable sights and experiences. In autumn and winter, lucky visitors might catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, while summer offers more than three months of uninterrupted daylight, allowing for endless exploration under the midnight sun.

Summer Activities

Located at the 68th latitude, near the Arctic Circle, Lofoten experiences a unique phenomenon during summer—the midnight sun. So the average temperature of Lofoten from June to August is from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius. There is not much rain and the sun shines continuously, allowing for outdoor activities like hiking, climbing, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and surfing. Photography trip capturing beautiful spots in the village is also an activity not to be missed. The highlight of this extended daylight period is witnessing the midnight sun, a natural phenomenon when the sun remains visible during local midnight time. It is also known by other names such as Polar Day, White Night, and Nightless Night.

Instead of just admiring the beauty of the sun at night, Lofoten islanders often take advantage of the long daylight hours by coming out and doing other activities such as a picnic dinner, kayaking, camping or even go fishing at night. You can travel from Svolvær, Henningsvær, Eggum or Ballstad.

Charming Town on Lofoten Island

Scattered across the islands are charming towns, each with its own distinct allure. Among the most beloved are three villages:

Svolvær

Situated centrally, Svolvær serves as a bustling hub with a range of accommodations, shops, and art galleries. The iconic Svolværgeita, or ‘The Goat,’ a challenging climbing spot that resembles a goat overseeing the city, attracts climbers from around the world. Enthusiasts can reach the summit via a variety of trails, ranging from easy to challenging.

Reine

Regarded as Lofoten’s most beautiful village, Reine captivates visitors with its stunning backdrop of verdant forests and picturesque fishing huts nestled along the azure coastline. Contrasting with the clear blue, it mesmerizes the eyes of visitors in a way that can be called stunningly beautiful.

Å

Located at the southern tip, Å exudes a tranquil charm with its well-preserved 19th-century fishing village ambiance. Visitors can explore ancient boathouses and delve into the maritime heritage at the Norsk Fiskeværsmuseum (Norwegian Fishing Village Museum), which shows the livelihood of fishermen dating back 250 years ago.

Traveling to Lofoten Islands

Getting to Lofoten is part of the adventure. Travelers can fly into Svolvær (SVJ) or Leknes (LKN) airports year-round. Alternatively, during the summer months, there is a direct Arctic Route bus service connecting Harstad/Narvik Lufthavn (EVE) airport to Svolvær town, approximately 170 kilometers away. Ferries operate from Bodø to Moskenes in about 3.5 hours or from Bognes to Lødingen in just 60 minutes, both routes offering scenic views of Norway’s coastal beauty along the way.
