The Philippines is an archipelago with one of the most diverse natural habitats in the world. Natural attractions range from its bounding seas to exotic mountain peaks. We would like to introduce you to the Masungi Georeserve, a conservation area situated in the southern Sierra Madre Range in Baras, Rizal province, a land teeming with biological and ecological abundance. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed to partake in activities enabling them to connect with nature via hikes and day trips.
From Dying Forests to Natural Conservation Area
Masungi Georeserve is an ecotourism destination located approximately 40 kilometers east of the capital city of Manila. In the past, Masungi was threatened by exploitation in the guise of illegal limestone mining, logging and land grabbing. In 2017, a youth-led NGO signed an agreement with the government to revive this dying natural area, leading to the largest forest restoration initiative implemented in the country.
Marvels of Geological Formations
Masungi Georeserve is renowned for its limestone karst peaks, steep cliffs and surrounding lush montane rainforests, shaped over tens of millions of years. Its landscape is adorned with intricate rock formations, caves, and sinkholes, creating a distinctive and geologically significant environment. The reserve is also a haven for biodiversity, harboring over 400 species of flora and fauna, including birds, insects, snakes, monkeys, cloud rats, and civets. Among its inhabitants are rare and endangered species like the Philippine eagle, unique plants such as the Purple Jade Vine.
