From Gothic spires to contemporary art, from hidden speakeasies to thermal sanctuaries, Milan is a city where history and innovation live side by side. It’s a place that rewards wanderers—those who look upward at cathedral pinnacles glowing at sunset, and those who slip through unmarked doors in search of secret bars. Whether you come for world-famous masterpieces, high fashion, culinary excellence, or the simple pleasure of an aperitivo enjoyed in an iconic setting, Milan promises experiences as diverse as the city itself.

Marvel at Ancient Marble

The 600-year-old Milan Cathedral, or Duomo di Milano (Daily: 08:00-19:00) stands as the undeniable heart of Milan. This Gothic cathedral, Italy’s largest, is built entirely of marble, and dazzles with countless spires and statues crowned by the golden Madonnina – the city’s cherished symbol. During World War II, the statue was covered to prevent its shine from attracting bombers. For an unforgettable experience, ascend to the rooftop during the late afternoon, when sunset casts a glow over the ancient stone.

Embrace Leonardo’s Legacy

If there is one masterpiece not to be missed in Milan, it would undoubtedly be The Last Supper (Tues-Sun: 08:15-19:00), housed in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. This extraordinary mural captures the sacred moment of Christ’s final meal with his disciples. Over time, it has endured damage from humidity, war, and age, leading to multiple restorations, the most extensive lasting over 20 years. Viewing of this masterpiece is strictly regulated to protect this UNESCO treasure, and tickets released every three months sell out almost immediately.

Experience a Retro Journey

Designed by filmmaker Wes Anderson within Fondazione Prada, Bar Luce (Mon-Thurs: 08:30-20:00, Fri: 08:30-20:30, Sat-Sun: 09:00-20:30, Closed Tues) recreates the playful charm of 1950s and 1960s Italy. Pinball machines, vintage jukeboxes, and pastel Formica furniture evoke the feeling of stepping into one of his own films, especially The Grand Budapest Hotel. After enjoying a coffee and pastry, be sure to explore the surrounding exhibition spaces, which frequently host compelling contemporary art showcases.

Uncover the Secrets of the Speakeasy

Inspired by America’s Prohibition era, 1930 Cocktail Bar (Daily: 19:30-02:30) is a true speakeasy complete with an unmarked door. Entry is granted by invitation or code only. From the outside, it may appear ordinary, but behind its unassuming door lies a different world where mystery, classic elegance, and allure are revealed only to those lucky enough to enter.

It is also the perfect stop for beautifully packaged souvenirs. Today, Eataly has expanded far beyond Italy, with branches in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and numerous other cities worldwide.
