Milan is known as the fashion center of the world. At the same time, it has been a culturally rich city since ancient times. Get to know Milan through three museums from three different eras that perfectly combine art and fashion.

A decade of creativity at Armani/Silos

To celebrate four decades of creativity, leading fashion brand Giorgio Armani has launched Armani/Silos, a permanent exhibition space in the heart of Milan featuring the work of legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani. It first opened on April 30, 2015. The building was converted from an old granary built in 1950 with an area of over 4,500 square meters, collecting works from 1980 until the present time. It showcases over 600 pieces of fashion clothing and over 200 accessories. Inside the facility, a revolving festival extravaganza features an arsenal of digital data, bookshops, and chic cafés.

Architecturally, the four-story building is designed in a simple geometric shape. Cutting back on extravagant decorations, there is an original honeycomb-shaped warehouse which is preserved to create a dimensional open space. The name Silos was inspired by the building used to store food – Armani described food as essential to life.

Explore art and culture at Fondazione Prada

Patrizio Bertelli and his wife Miuccia Prada founded a cultural institution Fondazione Prada in 1993, dedicating it to artistic exhibitions, film, photography, philosophy, dance, and architecture projects. It is based in Largo Isarco, South of Milan. The place itself was converted from a brewery built more than 100 years ago. It was renovated from seven existing structures comprising of a warehouse, laboratory, beer production tank and three new buildings to be used as multipurpose areas for displaying art installations and exhibitions. The movie theater has a permanent program of film screenings and seminars. Featured are projects created by famous film directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Roman Polanski and Damien Hirst. Bar Luce, a café designed by film director Wes Anderson, captures the atmosphere of Milan from the 50s and 60s with its bright-colored furniture. Adding a nostalgic touch is a coin-operated jukebox and a pinball game table.

Learn about Milan’s fashion history at Palazzo Morando

Palazzo Morando is a Baroque building in Milan that was home to the Bolognini family until 1945, before being passed over to the city of Milan in the early 20th century. The iconic building is located in the heart of the fashionable district, on the very central Via Sant’Andrea. Featuring the 18th century family heirloom, Palazzo Morando is divided into two parts: the exhibits on social and cultural evolution of Milan from the second half of the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century which include paintings about Milan in the Napoleonic and Austrian eras, and the display of furniture, sculptures, and antiques from the family’s personal collection. The museum also showcases fashion history of the city’s residents, including clothing and accessories of people from the 17th to 21st centuries.
