The final months of the year bring very different celebrations across the region. In Bangkok, gilded barges take to the river; in Manila, the Christmas countdown begins before sunrise. From sacred ceremonies to an outdoor festival in Chonburi, these seven gatherings offer a closer look at the places that host them.
RETURN OF THE GOLDEN FLEET
Bangkok, Thailand
NOVEMBER 6, 2026
One of the oldest traditions in Thailand, the Royal Barge Procession is not to be missed. Around 2,200 Thai Navy oarsmen will row 52 magnificent gilded barges along Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River – a carefully choreographed event that culminates in the Royal Kathin Ceremony, when His Majesty the King presents new robes to monks to mark the end of Buddhist Lent. Public viewing points for watching the event, which forms part of official celebrations marking Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana’s fourth-cycle, or 48th, birthday, will be open at locations along the river.

LET IT GO
Chiang Mai, Thailand
NOVEMBER 24 – 25, 2026
For two nights in November, Chiang Mai lets the past drift away – and in two different ways. On the city’s waterways, people float small banana-leaf vessels bearing candles and flowers as offerings to the water goddess Phra Mae Khongkha. While these floating baskets, known as krathong, will send your bad luck downstream, glowing khom loi lanterns will soar up into the night sky – a traditional local festival, known as Yi Peng, that honors the Buddha. The grandest mass releases are held at licensed grounds just outside the city.

COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS
Manila, The Philippines
DECEMBER 16 – 24, 2026
Long before sunrise, church bells call Manila awake. Simbang Gabi is a nine-day series of dawn Masses, some beginning as early as three in the morning, marking the countdown to Christmas in the Philippines. At historic sanctuaries like Manila Cathedral, Baclaran Church, and Malate Church, crowds gather to pray in the quiet dark. Outside, stalls glow with freshly baked rice cakes, or bibingka, which are savored in the cool morning air. Tradition holds that whoever completes all nine mornings will have a heartfelt wish granted.
