Koh Kret, a serene island in Nonthaburi Province, offers a rich blend of history, culture, and craftsmanship, all within a short-day trip from Bangkok. This charming island is home to a vibrant Thai-Mon community that has thrived here since the Ayutthaya period, approximately 300 years ago. Renowned for its pottery, Koh Kret’s artisanal legacy continues to captivate visitors who come to admire and purchase the exquisite handmade pieces.

Feel the earth and shape your creativity through a hands-on clay sculpting workshop

If you wish to immerse yourself in the island’s artistic heritage, a clay sculpting workshop is an unmissable experience. We recommend visiting Sahai Din POTTERY CRAFT, where you can learn the ancient craft of pottery-making using a rotating wheel. You will start by learning about clay texture, before honing techniques to shape cups, pots, or vases. Once shaped to your satisfaction, you can decorate your creation with personalized patterns before allowing it to dry and be fired.

Clay sculpting is a meditative process that engages both mind and body. The cool, soft texture of the clay invites a slow, deliberate touch; while shaping it demands patience, concentration, and an understanding of its nature. The challenge lies in finding the perfect balance — too much pressure or too little can cause the form to lose its integrity, and it must dry properly before firing. Yet, there is something profoundly calming about working with clay, and the experience fosters creativity while encouraging mindfulness.

Did You Know?
Koh Kret pottery is renowned for its use of clay sourced from the Chao Phraya River, known for its fine, dense texture. This unique clay allows artisans to create intricate patterns and delicate openwork designs. When fired in traditional brick kilns at high temperatures, the clay develops a striking orange-red hue, resulting in pottery that is both robust and enduring. The distinctive charm of Mon pottery lies in its raw, unglazed finish, which highlights the natural color and texture of the clay. Upon touch, the coolness of the unrefined surface offers a tangible connection to its earthy origins. Perfect for home decor or as a thoughtful souvenir, Koh Kret pottery reflects the island’s artisanal heritage. For those eager to experience the craft firsthand, numerous studios offer engaging clay sculpting workshops.

Unveiling the Leaning Pagoda and the Ceramics Learning Centre

A visit to Koh Kret would not be complete without seeing its most iconic landmark — the Mutao Thai Pagoda, or Leaning Pagoda. Situated at Wat Paramaiyikawas Worawihan, the temple is a spiritual hub for the island’s Thai-Mon community. Close by, the Thai Nithat Ceramic Hall offers a fascinating exploration into Koh Kret’s pottery history. The exhibition showcases ancient ceramic pieces, providing insight into the evolution of this centuries-old craft.

Explore, Shop, and Taste Your Way Through Koh Kret’s Timeless Market

Beyond pottery, Koh Kret’s local market is a treasure trove for food enthusiasts. The island is renowned for its Mon cuisine, and one must try dishes made with Nor Kala, a native plant of Koh Kret. This versatile ingredient, related to galangal, is used in a variety of dishes, such as the popular fried fish cakes with young bamboo shoots. For those with a sweet tooth, traditional Thai desserts are also abundant, offering a perfect way to round off your meal. Additionally, you can rent bicycles or electric bikes from the pier near Wat Paramaiyikawas Worawihan to explore the island at a leisurely pace.
