The Chao Phraya River, revered as Thailand’s “River of Kings,” stands as a must-visit destination for travelers from around the world when in Bangkok. Beyond its breathtaking views, the river is home to centuries-old temples that remain awe-inspiring in their beauty. We invite you to embark on a boat journey along the Chao Phraya, discovering iconic landmarks and hidden gems that promise to elevate your travel experience.

Tips: For a perfect start, tourists can hop on a boat at Sathorn Pier, open daily from 09:30 to 19:30, and ride the Chao Phraya Express Boat. This convenient service allows you to hop off at various temple stops, immersing you in the rich cultural tapestry of the area.

Wat Prayurawongsawas Worawihan

A Stunning UNESCO World Heritage Gem


At the foot of the Memorial Bridge lies Wat Prayurawongsawas Worawihan, fondly referred to as “Wat Prayoon.” This temple, constructed during the reign of King Rama III, features the striking Phra Borommathat Maha Chedi, a magnificent white stupa that earned a UNESCO Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2013. Do not miss the Buddha images museum – Prayoon Phanthakhan within the temple, showcasing a captivating collection of Buddha images and Buddhist amulets.

Tips: To reach Wat Prayoon, disembark at the Memorial Bridge Pier and enjoy a leisurely walk across the bridge, taking in the vibrant surroundings.

Wat Kalayanamitr Woramahawiharn

For a journey of safety and lasting friendships


Next, visit Wat Kalayanamitr Woramahawiharn, also built during the reign of King Rama III. Home to the revered “Luang Pho To” or “Phra Buddha Trai Rattananayok,” this temple is believed to ensure safe travels and foster friendships. The chapel’s walls feature exquisite murals depicting the life of the Buddha and daily life in the era of King Rama III. Nearby, you will find the “Ho Phra Tham Mon Thian Thalerng Phra Kiat,” a revered repository of the Tripitaka from the reign of King Rama IV, alongside the Bell Tower, home to Thailand’s largest bell, both offering fascinating sights for visitors to explore.

Tips: From Wat Prayoon, you can either stroll along the river to reach Wat Kalayanamit, or take a boat from Tha Tien, followed by a ferry ride to the temple.

Wat Arun Ratchawararam

Pay Homage and Seek Blessings for Prosperity


Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan is home to Thailand’s tallest prang and holds the distinction of being the tallest of its kind in Thailand and around the world. Built during the Ayutthaya period, it was not until the reign of King Rama IV that the sacred relics of King Rama II were enshrined in the main Buddha Hall, prompting the temple’s new name, Phra Buddha Dhammitsarat lokathadilok.

The highlight of Wat Arun is undoubtedly its towering prang, exquisitely adorned with colorful glazed tiles and intricate patterns crafted from Benjarong porcelain, creating a stunning floral mosaic and other decorative motifs.

Tips: For a truly scenic experience, hop on a Chao Phraya Express Boat and disembark at the “Wat Arun Pier,” or take the cross-river ferry from “Tha Tien” to Wat Arun for a delightful journey.

Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararam

An Unseen Gem of Thailand with the Grand Reclining Buddha


Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram, more commonly known as Wat Pho, is the royal temple of the First Reign of the Rattanakosin Kingdom. Its standout attraction, and one of the hidden gems of “Unseen Thailand,” is the magnificent Reclining Buddha, an iconic sight that commands to be photographed. Another highlight is the Four Royal Pagodas, each adorned with intricate artistry that makes for a stunning visual experience. After exploring the temple, take a leisurely stroll through the charming Tha Tien district, brimming with delightful restaurants, cafés, and boutique shops.

Tips: If you are traveling along the Chao Phraya River, disembark at the “Tha Tien Pier” for easy access to this remarkable site.
