Held annually in the seventh month (June to July) at Wat Phon Chai, the Phi Ta Khon festival spans three days and features both men and women participating, though men are more commonly seen due to the adventurous nature of the performance. Participants don elaborate ghost masks crafted from coconut husks, intricately carved with vibrant patterns. These masks are not only artistic expressions but are also believed to ward off suffering, illness, and sorrow, bringing joy and prosperity to those who wear them.
In ancient times, participants in the Phi Ta Khon festival were required to discard their costumes by throwing them into the Man River, symbolically leaving behind their suffering and misfortunes.
